Can dogs have nail fungus?

Dogs can have Onychomycosis(Nail fungus) the same way as humans on their nail bed. They can get this fungus if the paws of dogs are not properly taken care of. This can also happen due to poor hygiene and the food habits of a dog. If the paws are always wet and the nails are not trimmed properly at the time.

Symptoms of dog Nail fungus

1)Chewing the paws or licking them

2)Discomfort and pain.

3)Not able to walk properly

4)Nail discoloration and brittle.

All the symptoms if diagnosed at an early stage can be treated with topical antifungal creams. If it’s at a later stage like where the poor thing is under real pain and there is pus coming around the nails its time to see a veterinarian.

The vet will take a sample of the nail and if its Nail fungus Infection, will prescribe appropriate medications which can be an oral one. The medication usually given is cephalexin or clindamycin which can be taken for 4 to 6 weeks. Also if you want to give some relief at home with pain its good to soak the paws in Epsom salt and iodine. Some of the vets might ask you to go for surgery and its always better to have a second opinion because the pets cannot speak for themselves.
